Blue Eagle String Band
What better way to celebrate the resilience of Americans during tough economic times than with a performance that combines songs and images from the 1930s? Young Audiences recently added music ensemble The Blue Eagle String Band to its roster. Their program, called …Whose Names are Unknown, introduces students to the era of the Great Depression and the New Deal through period music, captivating photographs, and informative narration.
During …Whose Names are Unknown, The Blue Eagle String Band performs iconic songs by artists like Woody Guthrie and the Carter Family, as well as many songs that aren’t the “standards” of the period. These lost gems express insightful political and social commentary, a playful but necessary sense of humor, and an unbreakable resolve.
…Whose Names are Unknown gives students a glimpse into the realities of everyday life during this time of great change through songs like The Bread Line Blues and The White House Parody, which bids a grateful farewell to President Hoover with the line “Now he’s gone, I’m glad he’s gone.” The band performs the songs in period costumes, using traditional instruments like the guitar, banjo, and mandolin.
In addition to the songs, the performance can also include projections of photographs taken at the time by important American documentary photographers like Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and others. The band also collaborated with Professor Joan Crouse, Ph.D. to create fact-filled narration that helps put the images and songs in context. The result is multimedia performance that transports the audience to another time in American history.
The group combines the talents of Tom Naples, Jim Mumm, and Lorna Czarnota. Tom, who has spent the past decade immersed in American traditional folk music, researched the background and created all the musical arrangements for …Whose Names Are Unknown. Jim is a retired public school teacher and counselor, as well as a music historian, multi instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and guitar instructor. Singer Lorna Czarnota is a storyteller, educator, author, and musician who has 25 years experience as a performer and teaching artist. In addition to being on YA-WNY’s roster for many years, Lorna has performed for audiences all over the world.
