Erie Saxophone Quartet
Young Audiences WNY is pleased to welcome a new ensemble to the roster in 2009, The Erie Saxophone Quartet. This unique group is made up of four musicians on bass, tenor, alto, and soprano saxophones, who joined together in 2006 after meeting at the State University of New York at Fredonia. The Erie Saxophone Quartet is dedicated to the study and performance of the saxophone as a classical and chamber instrument. Their repertoire includes original works as well as transcriptions of music that was written by master composers such as Bach and Mozart, long before the saxophone was even invented.
Natives of the Western New York region, over the past three seasons the Erie Saxophone Quartet has performed at public schools, colleges, community festivals, concert halls, nursing homes and churches, while receiving international recognition from living composers. Through collaboration with these composers, The Erie Saxophone Quartet now performs over a dozen works written expressly for them. As students of both music and music education, the Quartet musicians create their own transcriptions, which provides them with a deep understanding of the music that they can share with young people.
The Quartet’s program, When Bach Meets Sax, is an educational and entertaining way for students to learn about music from a wide range of styles and periods. As part of the performance, the Quartet may tell a story about the composition of a piece, or encourage the audience to actively listen for particular patterns or motifs and to share their interpretations at the end. A final Q&A session allows the audience to ask questions this unusual ensemble is sure to raise. The group also talks about careers in music and demonstrates how putting a new twist on tradition can produce something novel and engaging. When Bach Meets Sax is a great way to introduce your classroom or music group to fresh, inventive musicians who can help inspire students to blow their own horns, in the arts and in life!
The Erie Saxophone Quartet offers single and back-to-back auditorium performances. Workshops are available for music students who would like to work with musicians directly.
