Presented by Dale Davis at the conference as an example of her students’ work during her workshop, “Hip-Hop: A Connection to Student Engagement, Literacy, and Critical Thinking.”

On May 1st, YA-WNY presented a full-day conference, Arts Abilities: Addressing the Needs of Diverse Learners in and through the Arts, at Babeville, Starlight Studio and Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center.

Arts Abilities features the work of teaching artists and educators who work with people with special needs, “at-risk” youth, and incarcerated individuals.

The conference focused on the theory and practice of differentiating instruction to meet the range of learning differences found in today’s classrooms, community centers, clinics, after-school programs and other settings where the arts are taught. Participants learned about this inclusive approach to learning, which embraces learning differences as an aspect of diversity.

Presenters included lead teaching artists, educators and administrators: Gayle Danley, Dale Davis, Lucy Andrus, MSEd ATR, Carrie Marcotte, Joel Lewitzky, Mary M. Wolf, Debra Randall, Miriam Minkoff, and Kris Crosson.

The conference was attended by teachers, artists, administrators, teaching artists, health and human services staff, arts organizations, parents and other guests interested in reaching special needs youth in and through the arts.

Presented by Young Audiences of Western New York in collaboration with Starlight Studio and The Arts Partners Program of the Art Education Department, Buffalo State College. With funding from the Baird Foundation, The Dana Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
